Carrying Capacity

When Chiru was ten, he ran away, scared and afraid. That’s when he ran into Jesse. Chiru told Jesse that his parents were killed, and if he were better with his father’s swords (two MW Wakizashi his father had made), his parents wouldn’t have died. So Jesse cared for him and showed him how to survive in the wild, which they did together for the next five years.

One day, during those five years, when Jesse and Chiru were camped near a village, he decided to go into the village and look around a bit. That’s when he saw the girl, sitting on a fountain in the village square, crying. Despite her being upset (and a little tall for him), he was immediately attracted to her and went over to see if he could get her to stop crying…

Her diary had been stolen, and the bookmark she used to mark where she had stopped writing was a likeness of her sister that had been brutally killed by Bruisers the winter previous. Chiru assured her that he could get it back, if she knew where it had gone. Bruisers had it, and they were not too far off. Before he could ask why Bruisers had her diary, a few more of the village youths interrupted, having eavesdropped on their conversation.

“Yeah,” one of the taller boys said, “Go get eaten by the Bruisers. You aren’t even tall enough to come up to their knees.” Another laughed, “Yeah, Ankle-biter.”

Fury and humiliation colored his face and choked his retort. Determined, he turned around and left, towards the direction of the Bruiser lair.

Knowing he couldn’t take them on, he decided to go into stealth-mode. He managed to retrieve the diary and get all the way to the periphery, when he tripped over a dozing Bruiser’s leg. That’s when he decided to run. Now, when you’re 3’1", your legs don’t take you as quickly as you’d like them to, and at 33 lbs, that’s pretty much just a Bruiser scooby-snack.

And then his legs were pumping through the air. He looked up, and was being whisked through the air by a Tiger Bunyip. “Great,” he thought, “I’m still going to die.” But, much to his surprise, after out-pacing the Bruisers, the Bunyip set him down. Thankful beyond relief, Chiru introduced himself and decided to take him to Jesse, ecstatic that he had befriended a Bunyip, and a badass-looking one at that. After a hasty introduction, Chiru ran back to the village.

The girl was still by the fountain when he came back. Before she saw him, though, he noticed the kid from earlier. The one who had dubbed him “Ankle-biter.” Ready to gloat in his victory, Chiru was stunned when the girl kissed the jerk. Standing there for a moment, unable to bring himself to say something yet again, Chiru blinked back the furious tears and chucked the book at the boy’s head, turned around, and left.

Naturally nimble both on the ground (Nimble) as well as in trees, where his race commonly resides (Agile Climber).

Growing, even when it’s hard to tell, is exhausting on a boy (Deep Sleeper).
Extremely touchy about being bested in combat (Vengeful).
Finds waiting to be a waste of time he could be using (Impatient).
