Magic

Approximately 3-6% of the population of Bamal has psychic powers. This can range from weather magic to mind control. Firsts who had their powers manifest before the Leaving mysteriously disappeared shortly after their powers were revealed. Now, people with supernatural abilities, parnjawa, are typically treated with some amount of distrust, but are rarely killed or ostracized outright without provocation. Some warrens have a higher-than-normal population of parnjawa than others, and these communities typically tolerate living with the parnjawa as long as they use their abilities for the good of the warren. As a result, these warrens are often better off than others. Green City is one of the few places on Bamal where parnjawa are actually welcomed.

A few particularly strong parnjawa can imbue items with some of their power (or someone else’s…), but it takes quite a bit of effort to do so and involves leaving a piece of oneself in the item. Sometimes this causes items to take on their creator’s personality traits, for better or worse. As such, these items are extremely rare, valuable, and their owners do not easily relinquish them.
